LIVER SURGERIES

Liver surgeries encompass a wide range of procedures, addressing conditions from benign cysts to malignant tumors, traumatic injuries, and complex vascular issues like portal hypertension. The liver’s intricate anatomy and critical functions make these surgeries highly specialized, demanding precision, careful planning, and advanced techniques. At Gut Instincts, we prioritize safe, effective interventions, using minimally invasive approaches wherever possible, while ensuring comprehensive care before, during, and after surgery. Our aim is to restore liver function, treat disease effectively, and support patients through recovery with empathy and expertise.

Liver Resection (Segmental, Lobectomy, Wedge Resection) (Open or Laparoscopic)
Liver resection involves removing a portion of the liver affected by tumors, cysts, or damaged tissue. Segmental resection removes a specific liver segment, lobectomy removes an entire lobe, and wedge resection takes out a small triangular section. These procedures can be performed via open surgery or minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. Liver resections require careful preoperative planning, as the liver is highly vascular, and maintaining adequate remaining liver function is crucial. Post-surgery, patients are closely monitored for liver function, bleeding, and infection.

Surgery for Hydatid Cyst of Liver (Open or Laparoscopic)
Hydatid cysts are caused by parasitic infections, usually from Echinococcus species. Surgical removal involves excising the cyst while minimizing spillage to prevent recurrence or allergic reactions. Depending on the cyst’s size and location, the procedure can be performed openly or laparoscopically. Surgeons often combine cyst removal with careful drainage and sometimes partial liver tissue excision. Pre- and post-operative anti-parasitic medications may be administered to reduce recurrence risk.

Cyst or Abscess Drainage (Open or Laparoscopic)
Cysts or abscesses in the liver can result from infections, bile duct blockages, or parasitic infestations. Surgical drainage aims to remove infected or fluid-filled collections safely. Minimally invasive laparoscopic drainage is preferred whenever feasible, as it reduces recovery time and complications. Open surgery may be necessary for larger or complex collections. Antibiotics and supportive care are critical components of post-operative management.

Portal Hypertension Surgery (Shunt Procedures)
Portal hypertension, often due to liver cirrhosis or vascular blockages, can lead to life-threatening complications like variceal bleeding. Surgical shunts redirect blood flow from the high-pressure portal vein to systemic veins, reducing pressure in the liver and associated vessels. Types of shunts include portosystemic shunts such as the distal splenorenal or mesocaval shunt. These procedures require precise vascular surgery skills to balance pressure relief with preservation of liver function.

Surgery for Liver Trauma
Traumatic injuries to the liver, caused by accidents or penetrating injuries, may lead to severe bleeding and life-threatening complications. Liver trauma surgery involves controlling bleeding, repairing lacerations, and sometimes removing nonviable tissue. Depending on severity, surgeons may perform liver packing, resection of damaged segments, or minimally invasive interventions to stabilize the patient. Rapid assessment and careful surgical technique are crucial to improve survival and outcomes.

Resection of Hepatic Tumors
Hepatic tumors, whether primary (hepatocellular carcinoma) or secondary (metastases from other organs), often require surgical removal for long-term survival. The surgery involves excising the tumor while preserving as much healthy liver tissue as possible. Preoperative imaging and planning are critical to understand tumor location, vascular supply, and relationship to vital structures. Techniques may include open or laparoscopic approaches, sometimes combined with adjunctive treatments like ablation or chemotherapy.

Liver surgeries encompass a wide range of complex procedures designed to treat tumors, cysts, trauma, and vascular conditions while preserving vital liver function. Each surgery is carefully tailored to the patient’s specific condition, combining advanced surgical techniques with precise planning to ensure safety and optimal outcomes. Whether performed openly or laparoscopically, these interventions aim not only to resolve the immediate medical issue but also to support long-term liver health, recovery, and overall wellbeing. With expertise in both conventional and minimally invasive approaches, patients can expect thoughtful, patient-centered care throughout their surgical journey.
