GI TRACT SURGERIES

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a complex system responsible for digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall metabolic balance. When diseases, structural abnormalities, or cancers affect this system, surgery often becomes an important part of treatment. At Gut Instincts, we focus on advanced, minimally invasive (laparoscopic) and open surgical techniques to restore function, relieve symptoms, and improve quality of life. The following are some of the key GI surgeries performed with precision and care.

Laparoscopic Fundoplication for Acid Reflux
This minimally invasive surgery treats gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) by strengthening the valve between the esophagus and stomach, preventing acid from flowing back. Using small incisions, the upper part of the stomach is wrapped around the lower esophagus to restore function, reduce symptoms like heartburn, and improve quality of life. Recovery is faster and less painful compared to traditional open surgery.

Laparoscopic Cardio-Myotomy for Achalasia Cardia
Achalasia is a condition where the lower esophageal sphincter fails to relax, causing difficulty in swallowing. In this procedure, tiny incisions allow precise cutting of the muscle at the lower esophagus, relieving constriction while preserving surrounding structures. The laparoscopic approach ensures reduced pain, minimal scarring, and quicker return to normal eating.

Esophagectomy for Cancer (Open or Laparoscopic)

Esophagectomy involves removing part or all of the esophagus affected by cancer. Depending on the case, the surgery can be performed using traditional open techniques or minimally invasive laparoscopic methods. The removed esophagus is typically reconstructed using the stomach or intestine, aiming to restore swallowing function while prioritizing safety and long-term recovery.

Bypass Surgery for Corrosive Esophagus
In cases where the esophagus is damaged by corrosive injury, bypass surgery reroutes food around the affected area. This complex procedure often uses segments of the stomach or intestine to create a new pathway, allowing patients to eat and swallow safely, significantly improving nutrition and quality of life.

Gastrectomy (Partial/Total) (Open or Laparoscopic)
Gastrectomy involves removal of part or all of the stomach, depending on the disease, such as cancer or severe ulcers. Minimally invasive laparoscopic approaches reduce pain and recovery time. Post-surgery, the digestive system is reconstructed to allow normal digestion while supporting nutritional needs.

Gastrojejunostomy (Open or Laparoscopic)
This surgery creates a direct connection between the stomach and small intestine, bypassing obstructions or damaged portions of the digestive tract. It is often performed for gastric outlet obstruction, cancer, or ulcers, allowing food to pass safely and improving digestion.

Bariatric Surgeries: Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y), Sleeve Gastrectomy,Mini Gastric Bypass - Laparoscopic
Bariatric procedures help patients with obesity achieve long-term weight loss and improve metabolic health. Gastric bypass reroutes the digestive tract to limit calorie absorption, sleeve gastrectomy reduces stomach size, and mini gastric bypass combines restriction with mild malabsorption. All are performed laparoscopically to minimize pain, scarring, and recovery time.

Small Bowel Resection (Open or Laparoscopic)
This surgery removes diseased portions of the small intestine caused by conditions like Crohn’s disease, tumors, or obstruction. The remaining intestine is carefully reconnected to maintain digestive continuity. Laparoscopic techniques offer faster recovery and reduced post-operative complications.

Colectomy (Total, Partial), Hemicolectomy, Proctocolectomy (Open or Laparoscopic)
Colectomy involves removal of all or part of the colon to treat cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or severe obstruction. Hemicolectomy removes one side of the colon, while proctocolectomy may remove both colon and rectum. Reconstruction or stoma creation allows continued bowel function. Minimally invasive approaches speed recovery and reduce post-surgical pain.

Anterior Resection and Abdominoperineal Resection for Rectal Cancer
Anterior resection preserves bowel continuity by removing rectal tumors while maintaining normal bowel function. Abdominoperineal resection removes the rectum and anus, requiring a permanent colostomy in some cases. Both surgeries aim to achieve cancer-free margins while balancing functional outcomes.

Pouch Procedure for Ulcerative Colitis (IBD)
For patients with ulcerative colitis requiring removal of the colon, a pouch is created from the small intestine to restore bowel function. This allows patients to pass stool normally without a permanent stoma, improving quality of life while controlling disease symptoms.

Colostomy and Ileostomy Creation or Reversal
These surgeries create an opening (stoma) in the abdominal wall to divert stool for patients with bowel disease, trauma, or obstruction. Reversal procedures restore normal bowel continuity once the underlying condition is resolved. Patient education and stoma care are crucial for post-operative adaptation.

Surgery for Rectal Prolapse (Open or Laparoscopic)
Rectal prolapse surgery repairs a condition where part of the rectum protrudes outside the anus. Techniques may involve repositioning and securing the rectum internally or through minimally invasive laparoscopic approaches, aiming to restore normal bowel function and prevent recurrence.

Complex Anal Fistula Surgery, Hemorrhoidectomy, Internal Sphincterotomy
These procedures address anal conditions causing pain, infection, or bowel dysfunction. Anal fistula surgery closes abnormal connections, hemorrhoidectomy removes symptomatic hemorrhoids, and internal sphincterotomy relieves chronic anal fissures. Precision and care minimize complications while preserving continence.

Appendectomy (Open or Laparoscopic)
Appendectomy removes an inflamed or infected appendix, preventing rupture and serious infection. Laparoscopic approaches reduce pain, recovery time, and scarring, while open surgery may be used in complicated cases or emergencies.

Surgery for Recto-Vaginal Fistula
This delicate surgery repairs abnormal connections between the rectum and vagina, often caused by childbirth, trauma, or infection. Reconstruction restores normal anatomy and function, improving continence and quality of life for patients.

TAMIS (Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery)
TAMIS is a modern, minimally invasive technique to remove rectal tumors through the anus, avoiding external incisions. It allows precise excision with faster recovery, minimal pain, and preservation of normal bowel function, especially for early-stage cancers.

Feeding Jejunostomy (Open or Laparoscopic)
Feeding jejunostomy provides long-term nutritional support directly into the small intestine for patients unable to eat orally. The procedure is often performed laparoscopically for safety and reduced post-operative recovery time.

Re-operative Abdominal Surgeries
These complex surgeries address complications or recurrent disease in patients who have had prior abdominal operations. They require meticulous planning and expertise to navigate scar tissue, restore anatomy, and optimize functional outcomes while minimizing risk.

At Gut Instincts, our approach to gastrointestinal surgery is guided by precision, compassion, and patient wellbeing. Whether through minimally invasive techniques or traditional open surgery, every procedure is tailored to the individual’s needs, aiming for the best outcomes with the fastest recovery possible. Our goal is not only to treat disease but to restore comfort, function, and quality of life, helping patients navigate their digestive health with confidence and clarity.
